Southern Oregon: Waterfalls of the North Umpqua River
Take
an alternative route to nature
The
North Umpqua is one of Oregon’s Wild & Scenic Rivers it is also
a National Scenic Bi-way. Historic Hwy 138 is known for its natural
wonders. Here you’ll find Rivers, Streams, Lakes, Forested Mountains
and best of all Waterfalls. Your journey truly begins when you reach
the North Umpqua River. Make your way to this internationally known
river and pick your adventure.
Majestic
waterfalls wait your discovery. With dozens of trails to choose
from, rest assured there is a trail here to meet everyone’s skill
and abilities. Graceful and Beautiful “Toketee Falls” (pictured)
was born to a narrow gorge and the massive flow of the North Umpqua
River. The trail to the falls takes you thru an old growth forest
to viewing platform. From there you can see the falls cascade over
two drops to a pool below.
Another
well-known waterfall is “Deadline Falls” This massive but short
waterfall is where you will see Steelhead and Salmon jumping over
this powerful waterfall on their journey from the Pacific Ocean
to spawn in the tributary waters of the Cascade Mountains. The North
Umpqua trail #1414 begins 79 miles from the High Cascades at Swiftwater
Park near the town of Idleyld Park. The trail is rated as easy and
is accessible to the disabled and is popular with families and seniors.
The
North Umpqua region hosts several other trails to hike and numerous
waterfalls to immerse yourself in. Some local favorites are
Lemolo Falls, Watson Falls, Clearwater Falls they are certain
to supply you with a full dose of nature.
